Children need to know about sex? • Help kids cope with their feelings & peer pressure • Enable them to take charge of their lives & have a loving relationship • Help protect them from sexual abuse • Prevent • Teen pregnancies • STD (sexually transmitted diseases) • Sexual violence
WHAT to tell our kids? It must be age appropriate! 3-5 years old • Teach the correct names of parts of the body like teaching them the elbows, knees • Tell the difference between a boy & a girl • Some parts are private: teach them on inappropriate touching by other poeple • Where babies came from? • “Babies grow in a special place inside the body”
WHAT to tell our kids?..... 5-7 years old • Awareness of their own gender and of others • Explain the terms they see and hear on TV • “Sex is part of a loving relationship between grown-ups”

SEXUAL INTERCOURSE What exactly does "having sex" mean? "Having sex" can mean many things. • It can refer to intimacy or closeness between a man and a woman, between two men or between two women. • "Having sex" doesn't just mean when a man's penis enters a woman's vagina.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases STD • Infection spread by having SEX with another person who is infected. • SOME are curable , OTHERS are not • Those who have it might look HEALTHY, But they have it!

AIDS Acquired • Not born with the disease compared to most immune deficient conditions • *You can only be born with AIDS if your mother had AIDS when pregnant Immunodeficiency • Characterized by a weakened or ineffective immune system with no resistance to infections. Syndrome which means: • AIDS is a combination of signs and symptoms which occur together due to the HIV infection as well as many other infections as a result of theimmunodeficiency

SYPHILIS (CURABLE)

Bacterial Vaginosis The risk of acquiring Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is increased by: • changing sexual partners • douching • using intrauterine devices (IUDs) The infection can not be spread from person to person by casual contact, such as: • clothing • eating utensils • swimming pools • toilet seats

Bacterial Vaginosis Symptoms • Although more than 50% of women with Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) have no symptoms, when symptoms do occur they include the following: • Excessive, thin gray or white vaginal discharge that sticks to the vaginal walls • Fishy or musty, unpleasant vaginal odor, most noticeable after sex • Vaginal itching and irritation
CHANCROID • soft chancre • venereal sore • bacterial disease causing painful, irregularly shaped sores, but is a localized infection which can be treated and cured and has no long-term effects.
