Karibu Shinyanga! Welcome to Shinyanga! Over 2 million cattle are kept in the region. Almost as many cattle as people!
SHINYANGA FACTS • Shinyanga Region Population: 2,796,630 (Tanzanian National Census 2002) • Average household size: 6.3 • Main tribes: Sukuma, Nyamwezi and Sumbwa • Agriculture: Over 2 million cattle are kept in the region. Crops include maize, cotton and rice. • Other industry: Diamond, Gold mines • Average rainfall: 700mm per year
Why are trees so important? • Without trees to protect the ground, soil was lost from the land, so there was very little fodder for cattle to eat • Firewood was so scarce that people had to burn cow dung instead • Trees help the soil store water. Without trees, springs dried up and water became hard to find.
People like the Katakwas had to find ways to protect and restore the forest. Now Shinyanga is green again!
