The two major numbering systems • Strong: a late 19th-century system associated originally with the Authorized or King James Version (A/KJV). • Goodrick/Kohlenberger (G/K): a late 20th-century system associated originally with, and still tied closely to, the New International Version (NIV). Conversion charts exist, e.g. the “Numbering system indexes” beginning on • p. 1811 of The NIV exhaustive concordance, ed. Goodrick & Kohlenberger, REF BS425 .G62 1990, and • p. 759 of vol. 5 of the New international dictionary of Old Testament theology and exegesis (NIDOTTE), REF BS440 .N438 1997.
The steps (Hebrew) • From either • an NIV Old Testament(e.g. the Zondervan NIV study Bible, REF BS195 .N37 2002f) and The NIV exhaustive concordance, REF BS425 .G62 1990, or • Something like The Blue Letter Bible (http://www.blueletterbible.org/) and a conversion chart • To • the Hebrew-English concordance to the Old Testament with the New International Version, REF BS1121 .K65 1998, and • the New international dictionary of Old Testament theology and exegesis (NIDOTTE), 5 vols., REF BS440 .N438 1997, • To the Theological dictionary of the Old Testament (TDOT), 16 vols. to date, REF BS 440 .B5713 (in progress).
From a Strong to a G/K number • 1. The Blue Letter Bible gets you the Strong number • Locate the verse or passage in question in the version of your choice: • Click on here: • 1588 (without the H, which stands for Hebrew) is the Strong number: • The Theological wordbook of the Old Testament (TWOT), 2 vols., REF BS440 .T49, is keyed to Strong numbers 2. A conversion chart gets you the corresponding G/K number Because that conversion chart appears from p. 759 of vol. 5 of the NIDOTTE, you could go directly from The Blue Letter Bible to the NIDOTTE:
