  1. Clinician Assessment for Practice Program (CAPP) Mary-Lynn Watson, M.D.,CCFP(EM)

Purpose • The program assesses the clinical skills of international medical graduate (IMG) physicians who wish to become licensed in Nova Scotia. • "CAPP is aimed at the many well-qualified IMG physicians residing in Canada who are eager to have their skills assessed for possible licensure in Nova Scotia," • successful candidates will be eligible to apply for a defined licence to practice medicine in Nova Scotia under the guidance of an experienced physician mentor." • Dr. R.   3. Program • Part A : • Therapeutics exam: 50 multiple choice and short answer • Objective Structured Clinical Examination: 15 clinical scenarios • Evaluation is against all physicians undergoing the CAPP assessment

  4. Program Continued • 2 evaluations thus far: June 2005 12 successful candidates • December : 10 successful • Another exam scheduled for June approx 30 candidates

  5. Program Part B • In NS: defined license • Sponsorship • CME/ Educational goals • Mentorship, initial phase 2-4 weeks • Practice based assessment at 4-6 months by external assessor • 10 months: multi source assessment

  6. Program Part C • All reports reviewed • Reassessment as needed • Potential to continue with defined license, new needs identified • No formal evaluation’ i.e. OSCE etc at end of program

  7. Components • Mentorship program in communities throughout N.S. • Mentors are aligned with CPSNS and are provided support • Successful candidates are supported by both the CPSNS and CME

  8. CME Component Development of an Educational Plan based on performance at the Therapeutics and OSCE exams Assistance in the methods used to meet these goals Assistance throughout the placement with issues that present during the mentorship.

  9. Learning Contract Goal Means of Attainment Measured by: Therapeutics History taking Physical Exam Diagnosis, problem definition Investigation Management Procedural skills Medico-legal/ethical Communications/attitudes Identified by mentor Identified by learner

  10. Challenges • New program • Multiple educational backgrounds • Various levels of comprehension of CME and abilities to access information in non didactic format • Self assessment skills

  11. Future • Excellent model which may be applicable to all types of foreign trained individuals • Very diverse group of interested individuals participating in the program • Excellent potential for research
