History of Ethanol • 1908 - Ethanol use as a automotive fuel • Ford’s Model T was modified to run on gasoline or ethanol • 1920’s – Standard oil marketed 25% ethanol gasoline • 1938 – Alcohol plant in Atchison, Kansas • Produced 18 million gallons per year • Supplied 2000 service stations in Midwest. • 1940’s – After World War II ethanol industry collapses • 1970’s – Renewed interest in ethanol • Middle East oil embargo & Lead phased out of gasoline • Gasohol market by oil companies – 10% ethanol, 90% gas • 1978 – Federal subsidy – production jumps from 10 to 175 MGY • 2006 – U.S. production reaches 4.8 billion gallons per year US Ethanol Production
