ERT461/ERT44 What is Engineering Design projects: Apex of the undergraduate degree program Using previously learned courses The projects are to be integrative and investigative Students are required to work in GROUP of 5-6 on design project of real world problems Knowledge Sincerity Excellence
ERT461/ERT 424 Biosystems Engineering Design 1 objectives: To integrate the concepts learned in the past courses and apply them to real world problems. To give the students an opportunity to develop the ability to organize work to achieving a clearly specified goals. To develop skills in some combination of design, mathematical, scienctific and engineering analysis as an integrative activity appropriate to BSE and to present an account of the work in written and oral form. To undertake engineering projects based on sound technological principles, intellectual reasoning and related societal, legal, environmental, and safetyissues (not just production of a descriptive technical report). Course synopsis: Biosystems/ Bioprocess Engineering Design is a 2 part course covering aspects of engineering design related to open-ended design projects at professional level engineering design task in biosystems engineering field. The design project is a team-based approach to provide capstone design experience emphasizing on the application of sciences, mathematics and engineering science acquired in earlier course work in design of projects. The scope of the course covers the knowledge on the elements in project formulation, planning/scheduling, management and communication, engineering economics including cost-benefits analysis and budgeting, critical thinking, ethics and safety in engineering design, fundamental in engineering design methodology (the process and tools) and systems engineering. Analysis of case studies pertaining to engineering issues in design. [Projects that only involve review of published articles cannot be considered.] ERT461/ERT424 COURSE SYNOPSIS Knowledge Sincerity Excellence

ERT461/ERT424 TEAM POLICIES Equality of work - Work is to be conducted by the team with an equal distribution of tasks. It is up to the team to assign tasks Meetings – It is expected that each team will meet outside of class once per week or more frequently when required. Minutes of these meetings should be recorded in each student’s logbook. Conflicts- Students are to make every attempt to work out conflicts within their group. The course coordinator should be informed and asked to intervene only when diligent attempts of resolution have failed. Dismissing a team member – Occasionally a team member will refuse to participate at a satisfactory level, even after much urging by his/her teammates. Teams which are dissatisfied with the productivity of a team member may vote to dismiss that team member. That team member will then have to complete an independent project of sufficient scope to warrant full credit in the course. Full documentation of shortcomings and attempts to reconcile will be expected by the course coordinator before the decision is deemed final. The instructor has the final decision. Group Supervisor – Teams should have a supervisor which can be provide some oversight of projects. They are not to make decisions for a team, but only provide guidance. Supervisors can be any lectures or an appropriate industry person. Knowledge Sincerity Excellence

Design Team • Engineering design projects require diverse skills • This creates a need for team work • Members skills • Technical • Problem-solving – incor. societal, safety, environmental issues, • Interpersonal • Teamwork Knowledge Sincerity Excellence
Design Team • Teams that spend time together tend to be successful teams • Respect each other • Listen actively • Consider your response to others • Constructively criticize ideas, not people • Respect those not present • Communicate your ideas effectively • Manage conflict constructively Knowledge Sincerity Excellence
Design Team • Hold effective meetings • Have an agenda • Show up prepared • Pay attention • Schedule time and place of next meeting • Summarize – minutes of meeting, circulate • Assign tasks and responsibilities Knowledge Sincerity Excellence
