Basic Facts cont….. • Contain organs and organ systems • Organs are suspended and supported by fluid in the coelom • Exchange gases and waste through skin (Diffusion) • Longitudinal and circular muscles span body length • Digestive muscles move food through body= Peristalsis • Reproduction= Predominately sexual
3 Classes of Annelids Polychaeta Oligochaeta Hirudina
Class Polychaeta • Aquatic Tube Worms • 6500 known species • Live in an underground burrow
Hirudina • 300 species • Bloodsucking parasites called leeches • Parasitic leeches can release a substance to prevent clotting and remain attached to host. • Non-parasitic leeches feed temporarily and remove when full of blood
Class Hirudina cont….. • Used commonly in medical practices to reduce swelling in patients
Class Oligochaeta • Earthworms • 2500 known species • Detrivores (eat dead and decaying material in soil) • Used to aerate/plow soil in gardens or compost piles • Hermaphroditic Sexual Reproduction
Earthworm Reproduction • Earthworms arrange themselves to share reproductive fluids. • Each worm has the capability to produce or receive eggs or sperm • Newly fertilized eggs are left to develop inside of a slime ring • Worms will crawl out of the slime ring when fully developed.
