iPad Music Pilot • Pilot program conducted for Robin Giebelhausen’s music courses in Fall 2013 and Spring 2014. • Checked out about 15 iPads to students for the semester with preloaded apps. Students would have the iPad checked out the entire semester. • iPads would be checked in at the end of the semester to wipe and clean for the following course/semester.
iPad Music Pilot • iPads were setup using Apple Configurator. • Used to restore the device, install a profile to restrict some user actions, and install apps purchased through the Volume Purchase Program. • Apps installed: • Students could AirPlay their iPads to an AppleTV installed in the classroom, with restricted access through Aruba ClearPass. • YouTube • WordPress • SoundCloud • ShowMe Interactive Whiteboard • Schoology • Podcasts • iTunes U • iBooks • EducreationsIncreative Whiteboard • Edmodo • GarageBand • Find My iPhone • Google Drive • Dropbox • Google Chrome • Promethean ActivEngage2 • Microsoft OneNote • Microsoft Excel • Microsoft Word • Microsoft PowerPoint • Dubstep SX • Flipps HD • Pages • forScore • iMovie • SMART Notebook • GoodReader for iPad
iPad Music Pilot • Drawbacks of using Apple Configuratorare the process is very static. Device has to be in the hands of the administrator to make changes. • Future semesters will include a much different rollout – through OS X Server’s Profile Manager rather than Apple Configurator. • Mobile Device Management (MDM) solution. • Allows iPads to be controlled remotely. • Device can be locked or wiped should it be lost. Passcode can be cleared if forgotten. • Restrictions can be added/removed if change is needed. • Apps can be tied to a user’s AppleID, allowing them to update apps and conduct in-app purchases.

Future Projects • Usability Studies Pilot • Lecture Capture • Media Repository • Kaltura and Collaborate Expansion • Student Support Annex (DSH)
Usability Studies • Definition: • Atechnique used in user-centered interaction designed to evaluate a product by testing it on users. Provides direct input on how real users use the system. • Project will focus on websites, apps and computer interfaces.
Usability Studies • MEELS (from Usability.gov) • Memorability -If a user has used the system before, can he or she remember enough to use it effectively the next time or does the user have to start over again learning everything? • Efficiency -Once an experienced user has learned to use the system, how fast can he or she accomplish tasks? • Errors - How often do users make errors while using the system, how serious are these errors, and how do users recover from these errors? • Learnability - How fast can a user who has never seen the user interface before learn it sufficiently well to accomplish basic tasks? • Satisfaction - How much does the user like using the system?
Usability Studies • Collaboration with the English Department • Pilot in Johnson Center Computer Lab • LUCID – Lab for Usability, Communication and Information Design (proposed) • Equipment • Computing, cameras, recording • Software • Morae • Eye tracking • Keystroke analysis • Video capture
Lecture Capture • Integration of Mediasite with UNM Learn • Joint project with IT looking at expansion
Media Repository • The purpose of the project is to ensure that: • Content is shared complaint with current policy • Content can be reused and repurposed • Content is easy to create, find, reference and consume • Content can be read by UNM’s various enterprise systems by potentially using an array of platforms including: Learn LMS, MediaSite, iTunes U, YouTube, etc. • Content is stored as effectively and efficiently by maintaining a central single copy which is generally referenced rather than copied over and over and/or stored in an array of different locations as we do today.
The Future • Web conferencing and media for all • Video collaboration to the Desktop • Explore cloud hosting of bridge • Zoom
Student Support Annex • Dane Smith Hall Annex Remodel Room 121 • Spring 2015 • Device Troubleshooting and Set Up assistance • Support 1 to 1 Computing Expectation • Pilot Student Equipment Support and Checkouts • Laptops, Tablets, Cameras, etc.
