  3. Study: The “Booty Call”: A Compromise Between Men’s and Women’s Ideal Mating Strategies • Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason, M. J. (2009). The “booty call”: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journals of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470. • Booty Call: “involves the solicitation of a non-long-term partner for the explicit or implicit intent of engaging in sexual activity… [and] often involves an underlying friendship, has some investment and longevity, and may be characterized by emotionally intimate acts, such as kissing.” Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason, M. J. (2009). The “booty call”: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journals of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.

  4. Purposes • To obtain general descriptive measures on booty call initiation, acceptance, and rejection. • To investigate specific aspects of booty calls that distinguish them from other relationships. • “If the booty call is a ‘compromise’ relationship as we have hypothesized, then some of its elements should be similar to those of short-term relationships, whereas other elements should be similar to those of long-term relationships.” Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason, M. J. (2009). The “booty call”: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journals of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.

  5. Study One • Participants – 61 college students (42 female, 19 male), Mean age = 19.6 • Study One Questionnaire: • Participants reported how many booty calls they initiated or were solicited of them in the past week and the past month. • Participants reported, on a 1-7 scale, how likely they were to use email, text messaging, or online chats to initiate a booty call. • Free response - Reasons for booty calls, why they’d turn someone down, and why they don’t transition into long-term relationships (For use in Study 2) Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason, M. J. (2009). The “booty call”: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journals of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.

  6. Study One Results • Women were more likely to receive booty calls, men were more likely to initiate them. • 31/42 women (74%) and 7/19 men (37%) had had a booty call that resulted in sexual activity. Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason, M. J. (2009). The “booty call”: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journals of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.

  7. Study Two • Participants – 42 college students (21 Males, 21 Females; Mean age = 21.) who had had a booty call that resulted in sexual activity. • Study Two Questionnaire • Rated (on a 1-7 scale) reasons why they might accept or reject a booty call. (Reasons were collected from Study One.) Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason, M. J. (2009). The “booty call”: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journals of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.

  8. Study Two Results • The top reason for accepting or rejecting a booty call for both genders was physical attractiveness. • Friendship was a predictor of accepting a booty call, but not rejecting one. • Men were more likely to say the booty call did not transition to a long-term relationship because he just wanted sex. • Females were more likely to say the booty call did not transition to a long-term relationship because the male just wanted sex. Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason, M. J. (2009). The “booty call”: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journals of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.

  9. Discussion • Men – Booty calls are exclusively for the purpose of sex. • Women – Booty calls are also related to friendship, compatibility, and personality. • Men were the reason booty calls did not transition into long-term relationships. • Hypothesis: Booty calls are a compromise between male and female reproductive strategies. Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason, M. J. (2009). The “booty call”: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journals of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.

  10. Limitations • In Study One, few males participated. • In Study One, participants were not screened as individuals who participated in booty calls. Only 64% of participants had had a booty call (and only 7/19 males). • Are there alternative reasons for booty calls other than a compromise between male an female reproductive strategies? Do females really believe that they have a chance of getting the guy to commit? Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason, M. J. (2009). The “booty call”: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journals of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.

  11. Alternative Explanation • Our theory is that booty calls emerged as a result of the sexual revolution, feminism, and an increased reliability of contraceptives. It’s frequency has been enhanced by technology (texting, web chatting) which feels less personal and reduces the possible shame of rejection. • Evolutionarily, casual sex is a result of sex being pleasurable, which is likely due to the social nature of humans and the increased likelihood for consensual sex when both genders desire it. Casual sex is on the rise due to increased contraceptive effectiveness. • Discussion? Which do you find more compelling? Might both mechanisms be at work? Jonason, P. K., Li, N. P., & Cason, M. J. (2009). The “booty call”: A compromise between men’s and women’s ideal mating strategies. Journals of Sex Research, 46(5), 460-470.
