What is the approach to Functional Skills at WJEC? • Providing learners with meaningful assessment opportunities that are relatable and relevant • Accessibility and approachability • Utilising experienced, successful examining team • Context-based assessment of skills • Scenarios given; combination of task and test

English Levels 1 and 2 – An Overview • External Assessment: • Tiered papers - differentiated • January and May opportunities – e-assessment trials beginning March 2009 • Modular Assessment – re-take possibilities • Reading Paper (1 hour) • Writing Paper (1 hour) • Internal Assessment: • Speaking and Listening

English Entry Level 2 and 3 – An Overview • External Assessment: • One five-hour controlled task of Reading and Writing • Six week assessment window (Sept-Nov and Feb-May) • Separate Entry 2 and Entry 3 papers for 2009 • Internal Assessment: • Speaking and Listening – Informal discussion in pairs/groups Interview

  5. ICT Levels 1 and 2 – An Overview • One extended controlled task • Five hours in total during Nov/Dec or March/April (within a four week period) • Assessment downloaded from WJEC secure website • Completed on screen • January and May opportunities • Tiered papers for Levels 1 and 2

  6. Maths Levels 1 and 2 – An Overview • Differentiated, externally assessed papers for Levels 1 and 2 • Duration of both papers - 1 hour 30 minutes • January and May opportunities • Notional pass marks of 70% for each paper

  7. Entry Level Maths and ICT • Examined for the first time in May 2009 • Five hour controlled assessment over a four week window • Tiered papers – E1, E2 and E3 for Maths; E2 and E3 for ICT • Maths – internally assessed • ICT – externally assessed

Support and Guidance • FREE training for centres delivering the qualifications • Monthly email bulletins keeping centres up-to-date with information and developments • Direct and easy contact with our Functional Skills Project Manager, Subject Officers and Support Officers • Regional Functional Skills Officers available to support teaching and learning • Access to our secure website containing materials, resources and guidance on administration procedures.
