Plus more which is yet to be planned.

Competition Guidelines • Design a LEED Platinum, performing arts center, which will house an existing historic proscenium/stage and serve as a landmark for local performing arts in the twin cities area. • Special consideration will be given for projects that address: • constructability • zero net energy • life cycle costs • and an integrated urban design aesthetic. • Utilizing LEED standards and strategies are highly encouraged, submissions will not be judged on a strict adherence to LEED certification.
Location • A high-profile site that connects downtown Minneapolis, the U of M, the Cedar/Riverside Neighborhood, and two light-rail stops (1 existing, 1 planned).
Then and Now • The project is being designed to accommodate an expansion of The Southern Theater by: • adding rehearsal space, administrative offices, classrooms and meeting rooms, • while re-designing the façade, existing common areas and access points for better pre- and post- performance, and intermission experiences.
What we are doing… • Learning about LEED credits and how to incorporate them into the design • LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) • 1. Sustainable Sites, 2. Water Efficiency, 3. Energy & Atmosphere, 4. Materials and Resources, 5. Indoor Environmental Quality, 6. Innovation & Design Process • Learning about AutoCAD and Revit for rendering designs • Competing in a local competition • final submission May 11 • winner competes for a national award at Greenbuild Boston 2008 for cash prize
Possible Concepts • Natural Lighting (skylights), Crystal based window shades • Façade design using natural lighting • Solar Power (south facing panels on roof) • Solar heating • Parking, car share program • HourCar: create a spot to encourage fuel efficiency • Green Roof • Rain Garden • Geothermal System (different types; air, water) • Light Monitoring Systems (reduce light pollution & efficient type bulbs) • Electronic Tickets (bioplastic scan-able membership cards) • Renewed & Renewable brochures (recycled paper?) • HVAC System and Natural Ventilation (type & placement) • Thermal Displacement Ventilation • Revolving door idea?
What we need… • AutoCAD or Revit experience • People interested in green building • Have knowledge about previous concepts • Desire to learn about previous concepts
Tanzania Project • Work Needed: • Upgrading Current Design • Total System Redesign • Emphasize cost reduction, sustainability and capacity • Develop School Relationships • Science kit development with SWE and school of education • If you are interested contact Tom Knowles Kaye Smith
Breadfruit • Erich Loch will be starting work on this project after spring break • Review current design • Design the punch • Produce more blade tools on CNC • Delivery of blade tools
Biodiesel • This semester prep work: • Learn about biodiesel process • Work with food service to regulate oil • Possibly run batches • Learn equipment to hopefully use next year • Next year continue making biodiesel with equipment
