Calling all Negative Nancies: Go on and Rant!
Ranting is a popular, if not always effective way to convey strong feelings in today's modern society. • Whether a rant is for the purpose of informing other people, or just bursting with rage, either way, the ability to rant is certainly one way of getting heard and releasing your opinion!
Rant Delivery A rant can be delivered in many different forms. • It may occur without any indication as a conversation gets heated or a hot topic is brought up. • It may occur in print format in newspapers, magazines, on blogs or other social media sights, etc. • You can also see rants in other medias like videos on YouTube or on TV programs like talk shows or news reports. • The View • Rick Mercer Report
Identifying Characteristics • Raised voices • Red blotchy faces • The odd drop of stray spit • Expressive hand gestures • May be an inability to hear other opinions • A lot of sentences containing the words “I think” • Strong, aggressive vocabulary • Details and examples to back-up statements
How to Write a Good Rant • Choose a subject that you know about. Although this is not the favourite practice of some people, ranting on an unfamiliar subject is one way to embarrass yourself. You may even stunt the cause of what you were ranting for, or glorify the one you ranted against. • Once you have chosen a subject, think about all the negative things concerning the subject of your ranting. What really gets under your skin about that particular topic? Do you have any personal experiences that could be used to your advantage? • Brainstorm a list of ways in which you can express those negatives in an effective manner. You don't want your cries to fall on deaf ears. • Write the rant down. Make sure that when writing the rant, you use words that appeal to the public you're targeting, avoid using vulgarity, and above all else, keep the rant as calm as possible. • Unleash your rant to the world.
More on Ranting • A rant is usually done with wit and humor, at the same time expressing a position, a stance, or just something that you think is important. A good rant has the following components:1. Clear structureIntro– Establish the topic of therant. • Middle – Provides a challenging statement which makes the listener/viewer think….The “AHA!” moment. • End – Wrap up with a statement that leaves the listener/viewer with an understanding of the topic, i.e. a summary with a catch. The catch should include content but could also be a facial expression/movement. • 2. A topic that is currentTopic should not be threatening, include profanity or malign an individual or organizations’ reputation. • 3. Utilizes facial expressions4. Good intonation5. Clear and concise messageAlso remember, arant can be as individualistic as the personranting!
How not to Write a Rant • Don’t write it in the heat of passion - i.e. when you’re really cheesed off. • Don’t rant without a purpose – decide if you have a point or if these feelings should be saved for a friend only. A rant is not just a long drawn out complaint! • Don’t write a “duh” rant – don’t write about something that everyone hates so that your audience gets to the end and is only left thinking, “Well, duh.” • Don’t rant about a person!! • Make it make sense – don’t get caught up in the emotions! Be sure you provide enough background and detail to support your main idea.
Examples of Rants • Facebook User: • “I just hate when my newsfeed is covered in people posting about broken hearts, cute pets, and the sandwich they had for lunch. I don’t care who you love, how adorable your snoring gerbil is, or that you are mad that you got mayo on your ham sandwich instead of mustard. Keep your comments to yourself, Facebook is not the place for this, quit crowding my newsfeed.” • Law Abiding Officers • http://www.rantrave.com/Rant/Shouldnt-Police-Officers-Set-a-Good-Example-on-the-Road.aspx
Rick Mercer - The Ranter of all Ranters • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1Y7qpiu2RQ • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1Y7qpiu2RQ • Every time I turn around the government or big business picks my pocket and bleeds my dry of what little money I have left at the end of the day! Gasoline prices are through the roof and heading to the moon! Electricity costs are skyrocketing! Now we have to pay more for garbage collection and they’ve jacked up the price of water in the name of the environment. What’s next? Making us pay for the air we breathe? I’m fed up!!
