HIGHWAY SAFETY MANUAL • Excellent research and production support through NCHRP • Independent Review Process-3 of 3 done • 4 Part review sub-committees established, each reviews chapter in that Part. Draft 2 review and TF approval finished in January • First edition submitted March 2009
HSM CONT. • 1st Edition HSM submitted to AASHTO • AASHTO ballotting process starting now. • Mid-year meeting in August with HSM and AASHTO Task Forces. Will work on implementation and feedback under leadership of Dr. John Milton, WA State DOT • First research project for 2nd edition HSM is funded. It is fourth crash prediction model.
ROUNDABOUTS • National Roundabout Conference May, 2008 in Kansas City, MO • 70 papers and posters presented • 370+ attended evidences interest • Conference proceedings DVD available shortly
SAFETY WORKFORCE • Core Competencies for Highway Safety Professionals published as Research Results Digest (RRD) 302 -- full text online • Curriculum for core competencies being developed under NCHRP contract. First pilot completed, two more scheduled for this spring.

NCHRP Synthesis Reports Synthesis 383: Changeable Message Sign (CMS) Displays During Non-Incident, Non-Roadwork Periods Explores the use of CMSs to convey messages on non-recurrent, environmental, special event traffic, and other special problems.

Synthesis Reports (cont.) Synthesis 392 Transportation’s Role in Emergency Evacuation and Reentry Discusses information on transportation’s role in emergency evacuation and reentry by summarizing aspects of its planning, control, and research. Highlight effective and innovative practices.
TRB Special Report 292, Safety Research on Highway Infrastructure and Operations: Improving Priorities, Coordination, and Quality Recommends creation of an independent scientific advisory committee (SAC). The SAC would be charged with development of a transparent process for identifying and prioritizing research needs and opportunities in highway safety, with emphasis on infrastructure and operations.
Special Report 292 (cont.) Use this process to recommend a national research agenda focused on highway infrastructure and operations safety. The report also explores opportunities to improve the quality of highway safety research. Implementation funded by SCOR
