  1. Challenges Facing Interdisciplinary Programs (Locally and Nationally) By: Chris Dunwody IDS Group 4

  2. Challenges Facing Interdisciplinary Studies Programs • In an effort to surmount the challenges that Interdisciplinary Studies Programs encounter we will answer the following questions. • What are the benefits of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program? • How is an Interdisciplinary Studies viewed in the work force? • How can the Interdisciplinary Studies Programs be promoted and/or marketed?

  3. What are the benefits of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program? From the San Diego State University Web Site… • Critical Thinking • Adaptability to Change • Decision Making • Leadership • Communication • Interpersonal • Analytical • Problem Solving • Flexibility • Global Perspective • Research

  4. How is the Interdisciplinary Studies Program viewed in the work force? • Information taken from a personal interview with Dianna Daoheung, a graduate of the Interdisciplinary studies Program at the University of Central Florida. She is currently employed at Merkley & Partners (a well known Advertising Agency in New York City, New York) • Dianna’s Response: “Well, my experiences have been great, although…I must admit at the job interview I was definitely put into a position where I had to sell my degree. With the majority of the applicants being Advertising majors. The interviewer was upfront and told me that I was at a disadvantage. If it was not for the interdisciplinary studies program at UCF and how it was structured. I would have had no clue how to talk about the benefits of my degree. But, as you know Chris, I was able to get around that obstacle and here I am an Account Executive managing ad(vertising) accounts around the world.”

  5. How can the Interdisciplinary Studies Programs be promoted and/or marketed? • Presented here are responses from two of the sources that can be found in the Works Cited section. • Quintessential Careers Page • The San Diego State Career Center Page

  6. How can the Interdisciplinary Studies Programs be promoted and/or marketed? • Quintessential Careers Page – 10 Ways to Market Your Liberal Arts Degree • Say It Loud: Your Liberally Educated and Proud • Sell Your Passion • Sharpen Your Focus • Your Skills: Know Them, Embrace Them, Market Them • Give Your Skills a Little Boost • Let Your Resume Sing the Praises of a Liberal-Arts Education • Enlist Your Cover Letter in Portraying the Applicability of Your Skills • Consider a Portfolio • Give Job Interview Responses a Liberal-Arts Spin • Ask Yourself if You'd Be More Marketable with Grad School

  7. How can the Interdisciplinary Studies Programs be promoted and/or marketed? B. The San Diego State Career Center Page • Match Your Skills with Employer Values • Review job descriptions/announcements • Read newspaper and magazine articles • Examine print and electronic resources about jobs and employers (see “How to Research Employers” available in Job Hunting folder of the Campanile Connections resource library.) • Talk with your professors or with individuals who work in positions in your field • Conduct information interviews with potential employers • Communicate Your Skills to Employers • Critical/Analytical Thinking and Problem Solving • Adaptability to Change/Flexibility • Interpersonal • Communication

  8. Conclusion • In conclusion, there are challenges that present themselves to the Interdisciplinary Studies Program. However, with the right spin theses challenges can be turned into benefits. Similar to most things in life – as Dianna eloquently stated, “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.” The lesson learned in this aspect is that after research and due diligence anyone can take a degree from the IDS Program and present it in any light they wish.
