Presentation Goals To discuss how organizations, given limited staff time and resources, can build and maintain a social media presence To highlight best practices for establishing and engaging with online followers on Facebook and Twitter To share free online tools that can be used for health advocacy and lobbying
Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health Health advocacy and policy organization based in Chicago Mission: In partnership with youth, we advocate sound policies and practices that promote a positive approach to adolescent sexual health and parenting. Reproductive justice: Social justice and human rights framework focused on equipping all people with the economic, social, and political power and resources to make healthy decisions about their gender, bodies, and sexuality

Five Steps to Using Social Media Create social media accounts Build social networks Maintain presence Integrate with online communications Advocate and lobby
Creating Social Media Identify a point person to set up and maintain sites Preferably a staff member and not an intern Staff member knows organizational messaging and relationships and is more sustainable over time Choose social media sites What is your target audience? How much time can you spend on social media? Set up only what you can maintain
Encourage supporters to start following social networks through email communications and website Building Networks

Do a keyword search on Twitter • Find and follow media outlets and public officials • Be somewhat selective with who you follow – what do they have to offer you? Building Networks
