  2. Step #1 – Expanding Military • Selective Service Act to draft GI’s (Government Issue, or soldiers) • Age range: 18-45 • Women become involved: WAAC, or the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps. Goal-do all things in military except direct combat • Women also take many jobs from those going to war

  4. One Hitch - Discrimination • African Americans and others face dilemma = Why fight? • A. Philip Randolph, Civil Rights Leader, fights for rights • Result=FDR calls for no discrimination by businesses and unions

  5. Step #2 – Create Programs for War • OPA, or the Office of Price Administration. Goal: Freezing wages, etc. and rationed foods such as meat, sugar, etc. • Rationing – a fixed portion of something given to people, while helping the military

  6. War Production Board – Rationed materials for the war effort, such as gas, oil, metals, rubber, etc.

  7. War Bonds issued for people to buy to support the war effort • Many other programs • During WW2, 41% of all production in the USA was for the war

  8. Step #3 - Propaganda • Movies, etc. Everything in society

  9. Step #4 – Future Preparation • Bring scientists in to try and advance the cause • Ex. Manhattan Project – Goal to develop the atomic bomb as quickly as possible Albert Einstein accepting U.S. citizenship in 1940
