  1. 4.2.2 Tropical Meteorology Research Yihong DUAN duanyh@cma.gov.cn

  2. Current State(1) • Knowledge transfer, specifically on converting recent research findings to operational use. • Published books and scientific articles in support of knowledge transfer and to better understand the tropical cyclones and monsoons. • Training events held on a regular basis.

  3. Current State(2)-FDPs • the Typhoon Landfall Forecast Demonstration Project (TLFDP) hosted by Shanghai Typhoon Institute/China Meteorological Administration, • the North Western Pacific Tropical Cyclones Ensemble Forecast Project (NWP-TCEFP) hosted by Japan Meteorological Agency.

  4. Current States(3)-RDP • the Research and Development Project (RDP) SCMREX (the South China Monsoon Rainfall Experiment) hosted by Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences/China Meteorological Administration launched in the Spring of 2013.

  5. Current States(3)-Workshop and Training • International Workshop on Tropical Cyclones (Since 1985, Every 4 years, IWTC-7 held in La Réunion, France, November 2010) • International Workshop on Monsoons (Since 1996, every 4 years. IWM-5 held in Macau China, October 2013) • International Workshop on Tropical Cyclone Landfalling Processes • International workshop on Monsoon Heavy Rainfall.

  6. Recommendation(1) • Continuation of the IWTC and IWM series(including IWTCLP and Monsoon Heavy rainfall) , which are the most successful of all similar workshops because it brings together scientists and forecasters in the same forum to exchange views. • Continuation of the supporting of FDP and RDP – TLFDP, NWP-TCEFP and SCMREX. these projects can serve as platforms for interaction between scientists and forecasters in particular problems related to TC forecasting • Encourage to rise a new RDP “High-resolution Numerical Prediction of Landfalling Typhoon” to focus on the wind structure and rainfall related to the TC.

  7. Recommendation(2) • Encourage other members to develop similar projects in other regions affected by tropical cyclones and monsoon area (e.g. India Ocean) . • support of further research on seasonal TC prediction – with the failure of the Atlantic forecast of 2013, what needs to be done to improve seasonal predictions, especially for landfall frequencies? • given the issuance of AR5, encourage to provide another summary assessment on climate change and monsoon, tropical cyclone activity within the next one to two years to support the IPCC AR6
