Getting started Get all your materials together. • OEA-PIE Contributor Roster (alphabetical by building, by local) These are ordered through your UniServ Office. Remember that roster information is confidential so please use caution when sharing roster info. • OEA-PIE/NEA Fund application brochures. Every member received a form in his/her membership materials but you should take plenty of extras. You can get them from your UniServ office or request them directly from OEA by emailing oea-gr@oregoned.org • Members can also donate directly online via our website: www.oregoned.org
Recruit colleagues to help! WHO DO I CALL? • Check your OEA-PIE roster for top contributors. They already believe in the cause and may want to help. • Talk to building reps to get the names of respected members at each site. If they join, others may follow. • Your UniServ Council’s Political Action Team • Ask a colleague who owes you a favor! REMEMBER: OEA-PIE drives work best as a short term campaign—and it’s easier to solicit help for short term projects. Communicate your local goal clearly and set up a system that denotes progress
Rally the troops Utilize your local rep structure and schedule building meetings • 3 days before the meeting: distribute announcements into mailboxes, email a reminder, and post to union bulletin board • 1 day before the meeting: Send out another reminder • Day of the meeting: Quick touch-base during the day to make sure folks attend Legal note: Because of the political nature of OEA-PIE, there are restrictions around the type of materials that can go into mailboxes or be sent by courier. Meeting announcements and local newsletters are acceptable. However, OEA-PIE forms or other promotional OEA-PIE materials are not. All meetings must be held on off-duty time.
Don’t forget: You can combine this meeting with the class size campaign and get double bang for your buck! AT THE MEETING • Keep it short—15 minutes or less • Have a sign in sheet to track attendance • Review the contribution program and outline the goals for the local • Act now! Have OEA-PIE forms ready and encourage participants to fill them out before they leave the meeting. REMEMBER: Any contribution is a good contribution. Focus on getting members connected to the program.
Follow Up • Ask building reps to follow up with members that did not attend the meeting. (Share local goals and recommended contribution amounts) • Send all completed forms to the UniServ office or local OEA-PIE coordinator • Recognize the members who gave with handwritten notes, building awards, or newsletter “thanks.”
Keep it going Use the momentum from the OEA-PIE drive to keep active in the political workings of your local/state • 10 minute meetings Make sure regularly scheduled 10 min meetings contain a political update • Local Newsletter Include a political component within your local newsletter • OEA website Share the new OEA website at www.oregoned.org. Check out the political action tabs. • Bulletin Boards Is your local utilizing its bulletin board? If not, encourage someone in each building to post the latest OEA “Newsflash” or OEA “Politics & You” (you can sign-up on the OEA website!) • Informal gatherings Sometimes the easiest way to update members is through an informal gathering. During a chat, it’s easy to let others know how directly politics impacts the profession.
THE ASK Feeling apprehensive about pitching OEA-PIE to the members? Follow these simple steps… • Explain what OEA-PIE is. • Share that you are an OEA-PIE member. • Let them know that they can make any size contribution—but recommend the certified/classified guidelines for the Presidential Challenge(and don’t forget to share about the BONUS tax credit). • Remind them: It’s up to us to ensure that educators have a strong voice in the political arena. More and more, events in Salem affect you in your classroom, career and home. OEA-PIE is one of our primary tools to voice our collective strength on behalf of OEA and students. • Ask them to sign the form and join you as a OEA-PIE supporter. • Make sure to THANK your member!
OEA-PIE Convention • To be able to vote at the OEA-PIE convention, there’s a ratio of 1 vote for every $5 contributed by local. • Votes go towards OEA endorsing candidates for various races.
