  4. What is Parent Education? Specific attempts to offer knowledge and support to parents in hopes of increasing parenting effectiveness. Although it has taken on many different forms this is the heart of it.

Assumptions underlying Parent Education Parents can learn Parenting is an area in which a knowledge base exists pertaining to effective types of parent behavior Knowledge alone is not sufficient to develop parenting competence All parents, no matter how education, well adjusted, or fortunate in their social and economic arrangements need help with learning how to cope with the parenting role

Teacher’s Role Acceptance, support and encouragement for all parents in a group to express themselves Objectivity to avoid taking sides in most discussions Tact, to protect each parent’s right to discuss in a non threatening enviroment. Alertness to both verbal and nonverbal responses of group members and using that feedback to guide the discussion and maintain group morale.
