  4. 3rd Rome? • In 1453 AD a Russian Monk declared: “The third Rome. . . shines like the sun. . . throughout the whole universe. . . Two Romes have fallen and the third one stands, and a fourth one there shall not be.”

Rise of Kiev and Moscow • Mongol Invasion (Golden Horde) • Tolerated the Orthodox Church (powerful) • Trade grew/but cut Russia off from Europe • Russian Princes had to submit to Mongol overlords • Absolute power of the Mongols served as a model for later Russian Tsars • Rise of Moscow • Head of Orthodox Church made it its capital became spiritual center • Defeated the Mongols • Byzantine Christian missionaries went to Kiev to convert the Slavs. • Cyrillic alphabet-adapted from Greek • Prince Vladimir of Kiev married a sister of a Byzantine Emperor. • Made Orthodox Christianity the official religion

  13. Roman and Byzantine Empires • Roman Empire was split into east and west • West: Roman Empire • East: Byzantine Empire • West Fell b/c: • Corruption/poor rulers/invasions by barbarians • Byzantine Empire Fell many years later b/c: • Corruption/No clear successors/Invasion by Muslims (1453)

Great Schism • When the west fell the Pope in Rome lost power and influence • The Patriarch of Constantinople became the leader of the Byzantine Church • Both argued over religious interpretations • Both declared each other heretics (recently rescinded) • Eastern Orthodox: • Believe they hold the line of succession from the original Apostles
