  4. Providing background information Reader-centered What does your reader need to know in order to understand your argument? Think like a reporter: who, what, where, when, why Thinking about your topic, what background information might you include?

  5. Definitions Defining key, controversial, and/or scientific terms for your audience. Thinking about your topic, are there any terms that need defining?

  6. Identifying a problem Your reader needs to recognize that a problem exists Leave your reader craving a solution Compelling example or fear can work Often its own section in longer papers Mainly useful for problem/solution papers or proposals Thinking about your topic, is there a problem you’re identifying?

  7. Coding your research • Develop a coding system to use on your source material • Identify your research needs (historical, background, definition, identifying a problem) • Invent for yourself a method of signaling where in your sources these needs are met.
