About The Physicians Foundation

The Physicians Foundation, established in 2003, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing physicians' work and improving healthcare in the U.S. They provide resources, research, and leadership programs to address current healthcare challenges and support physician practice trends and shortages. The Foundation awards grants to various nonprofit organizations to enhance the quality of patient care and help physicians succeed in their practices.

Overview • Founded in 2003 • Nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization • Provides perspective of practicing physicians on many issues facing them today • Surveys physicians and patients to study impact on them of government healthcare policies • Works to strengthen physician-patient relationship and assist physicians in sustaining their medical practices

Focus areas • The Foundation focuses on four core areas: • Physicians leadership • Provide physicians with the leadership skills necessary to drive healthcare excellence • Physicians Foundation Leadership Academy • Examines how physicians can deploy a variety of leadership and skills for effective organizational management • Healthcare reform • Offer physicians resources to succeed in today’s challenging healthcare environment

  9. Grantmaking • Awarded numerous multi-year grants totaling more than $28 million • Grants have been awarded to the following types of nonprofit organizations, including: • Healthcare systems • Medical society foundations • Universities

Grantmaking • Our grantmaking program strives to: • Identify promising ideas, initiatives and tools that address the needs of physicians in multiple practice arrangements • Offer solutions and actionable insights to help physicians maintain success within their ideal practice setting • Support physicians and medical professionals in their delivery of quality patient care

Recent grants • Institute for Medical Quality • Intensive training for chiefs of staff, committee members, department chairs and other physicians to increase their leadership knowledge and skills • University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill • Develop an open source, web-based projection model to estimate whether current and future physician supplies will meet population healthcare needs at the state and national level • Health Leads • Initiative to expand and deepen Health Lead's core model of providing services that will improve the health of poor and disadvantaged patients and families

Research & Insights • Conduct comprehensive, timely research to explore issues affecting doctors, patients and the future of the U.S. healthcare system, including: • Research on healthcare reform • Analysis of physician practices trends • Offer health providers and policy makers access to comprehensive research and white papers to help inform effective policy formulation

Recent research examples: • Next Generation Physician Survey (2012) • Polled 500 young physicians (aged 40 and under) to gauge sentiment about future of U.S. healthcare system and their own practice experiences • Health Reform and the Decline of Physician Private Practice (2010) • Surveyed 100,000+ physicians and found strong negative feelings towards new healthcare reform law • The Physicians’ Perspective: Medical Practice (2008) • Examined how the state of medical practice is shifting and factors driving an increase in doctor dissatisfaction

Upcoming initiatives • Healthcare Highway – June 2012 • As a follow up to 2011’s “A Roadmap for Physicians to Health Care Reform,” this report will present physician challenges in the current practice environment • 2012 Bi-annual Physicians Survey • This sweeping study of nearly 20,000 physicians across the U.S. will provide America’s physicians with a clear voice on the most pressing healthcare issues facing the nation
