The massive door with a leering gargoyle for a knocker was real enough” pg. 22 This is where Rainsford’s life first takes a turn for the worse. When he knocks he sees a fearsome man holding a gun at him, Ivon. Behind him is General Zaroff who knows everything about Rainsford. In this setting we learn that the general is creepy and has different ideas of fun. His actions tell us that he is not like most people. The generals new dangerous game changes Rainsford life forever.

  3. “Big tree with a thick trunk and outspread branches was nearby, and taking care to leave not the slightest mark, he climbed up into the crotch and stretching out on one of the broad limbs.” pg32 Here Rainsford is hiding after creating a difficult trail for the general to follow but he is still found. The general know he is here but he doesn’t kill him. This tells us that the general is as good as he says he is and that he is toying with Rainsford to see what he does.
