4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation? By Sophie Gibbs
Introduction While we were producing our media production, we had to use a number of new technologies in order to not only create our short film but to also do the research and planning beforehand and the evaluation after. Fortunately some of the technology that we needed to use we have had previous experience with in the past but still needed to learn new methods and techniques.
Blogging • With the use of blogging, we were able to put all of our work throughout the production of our short film onto a blog, this include all of our pre-production work such as scripts, storyboards, research etc. This ensured that it was easy for other people to see our work and it would all be in one place and that we could keep up to date with each piece of work.
InDesign • InDesign was a new programme we were shown how to use this year which allowed us to create our own posters and article for our media production. We wanted to create a poster to advertise our production, InDesign allowed us to contrast colours, images and fonts in order to attract the audience without them knowing much about the production. As InDesign is a digital programme, it gives us the opportunity to create a professional looking article and poster.
Internet • The internet was one of the best technologies to help us with our media production. It allowed us to do research on other short films that had similar genres to ours, to get feedback from others in order to evaluate our film, to help us get music etc. • We used the internet to find any diagetic or non-diagetic sounds that we would be using in our media production which helped us to show the emotions more in it and make the audience sympathise with the teacher. • In order to produce our articles and posters, we used the internet to go onto the Little White Lies website to see previous articles/posters they have created so we could create an article and poster with a similar style. We also researched forms and conventions of real media products and genres to see what we wanted to use within our production and what genre our media production would fall into. • Finally in order to get feedback for our evaluation, we created a survey online on Survey Monkey for individuals to fill out after they have watched our media production. We also uploaded it to YouTube to allow anyone to watch it.
Social Networking • Social networking allowed us to get a large amount of feedback in different ways. By uploading our media production onto Facebook, not only did it allow friends and family to watch it but it also let them leave comments about it and like it if they wanted to. This showed us what we did right and wrong while constructing our production. • Furthermore we left a link to our survey on each of our Facebooks in order to get as much feedback as possible. By creating a survey it allowed people to give their honest opinions but anonymously.
Digital Editing • Digital editing was the key aspect into creating our media production. We used Final Cut Express to edit our film. By editing digitally it allowed us to create a lot of effects, add in sounds, add in titles etc. By using all of these elements it helped us to create sympathy for the teacher which also helped to create anticipation and make the ending more dramatic and surprising. Digital editing was fast and made it easy to do quick cuts, change the tempo, cut out/add in background music etc.
Cameras By using a modern camera with a number of features that will also us to create effects helped us to easily film our media production. By using a camera with a tripod it allowed us to have steady camera shots and clearly define the angles and movement that we wanted to use. As we can also use the camera as a handheld camera, it allowed us to do tracking shots and create extreme close ups. Also while we were filming, you can zoom in and out which allowed us to change from a mid shot to a close up without editing.
