What are the benefits of an exchange? • Development of lifelong friendships • Language acquisition • Broadened world view • Cultural experiences • Making connections to another community • Forging friendships • “International learning and knowledge propels students towards acceptance and understanding of an array of different cultural and community perspectives” (http://www.wep.org.au/info/student-exchange-benefits) • Trip priority for France next year (has not been officially approved)
What happened in prior exchanges? • This is our fourth cycle of the exchange
When will I get my student? • BCHS students: Fill in profiles (in your student folder); if not there: on BCHS French Exchange site: http://www.bristol.k12.ct.us/page.cfm?p=5178 • BCHS student: EMAIL photo to amandarobustelli@ci.bristol.ct.us OR SAVE into your school folder • “Matchmaker matchmaker, make me a match…” • As soon as you get the contact information, start writing!
What about lunches? • You will pack lunches for all days except 4/6 and 4/15, the days students are at BCHS
What will we do on weekends? • Shopping • Bowling • Group get-togethers • “Typical American experiences”
What about weeknights and school activities? • Treat the French exchange student like another sibling • Arrange carpooling • Have student go home with another host • Group get-togethers

What should we expect? • Initial awkwardness • Initial reserve • (the French are generally more reserved than Americans) • Pointing • Fun experiences
What does the host student need? • Own bed (may share a room with someone of the same sex) • Towels (may bring own) • Laundry towards the end of the trip • Lunches/snacks • Welcoming, kind family • Open mind • Clear guidelines for bathroom use, eating, talking on the phone and internet access
