What the programme offers • Opportunity for Band 5 staff to take responsibility for day to day management of the neonatal unit with supervision and support from senior staff throughout their shift • Challenges traditional ideas that the most senior nurse should be the nurse in charge • Shift of responsibility
Dismisses the myth that “ Sister always does that” “ Leave that for the nurse in charge, they will sort it, fix it , solve it” You, the Band 5 Staff Nurse are the Nurse in charge You are going to learn how to sort it, fix it , solve it
Requirements Band 5 staff nurse Nurse in charge Be willing to empower junior staff to take control Support their learning and development Share responsibility Be willing to accept orders rather than give orders • Have completed a recognised QIS (qualification in speciality) • Build up personal workbook of evidence of experiential learning • Participate in supervision and record reflections on key learning events • Time frame : 6 months or more

Clinical skills • Being able to assist in a wide range of clinical skills • Being able to guide and direct other staff • Use your knowledge base and know when to intervene and challenge as the nurse in charge
Technical Skills • Know how to safely operate equipment in neonatal environment • Know how to instruct others how to safely use equipment • Know how to submit a range of data electronically,
Organisational Ability • Being able to respond effectively to fluctuations in ward activity, unexpected events • Being able to multitask– mental agility • Be emotionally resilient • Being creative • Being able to problem solve and develop your decision making skills
Communication Skills Being assertive is knowing how you feel and what you want AND Having the confidence to express one and request the other
Communication • Being the eyes and ears of the whole unit • Stepping outside your comfort zone • Knowing what is happening within and beyond neonatal and communicating this effectively • Liaising with MDT and parents • Recognising the challenges of conveying key messages to a team
Enthusiasm to share knowledge and learning • Creating a learning environment • Ensuring staff have opportunities for learning • Awareness of role of mentors and preceptors • Awareness of learning needs of mentees and preceptees
Value of Clinical Supervision • 1:1 supervision with a designated supervisor • Group supervision with colleagues who are also undertaking this development programme • Sharing your experience and learn from each other • Giving feedback to those undertaking the programme
Building up portfolio of evidence • Evidence that you have positively embraced the opportunity • Your portfolio is excellent preparation for interview for a promotional post based on your real life experiences • Your learning and development feeds directly into annual KSF and PDP • Meets annual requirements for clinical supervision • Classroom- textbook learning is complimented with real time experience

Success of the Programme 3 years on • Initially Band 5 Staff Nurse was encouraged as part of KSF process to undertake the programme • Now Band 5 staff are requesting to undertake the programme • Band 5 staff are being inspired by those around them to succeed • Band 5 Staff Nurses have undertaken the challenge, have awaited promotional opportunities within neonatal services across the Trust and 6 staff have been successful at interview and have been promoted.
Transition from Band 5 to Band 6 Try before you apply and when your amendment form is completed and over night you become a Band 6 Nurse in Charge You are ready to run with the ball Because He knows the water best who has waded through it (Danish proverb)
