Project Background • UF Bio-Diesel (gasoline made from natural resources) initiative that is being sponsored by UF. • Goal is to build the first student-run Bio-Diesel plant in the nation to run solely off of solar energy; in essence, a self-sustaining factory that builds self-sustaining energy. • As more solar panels are brought in each day to the plant and installed, the need for finding an efficient way to monitor all the voltages, amperages, wattages, etc. for these panels becomes very important.
Project Description • Design a touch-screen, automated control system at the UF Bio-Diesel plant. • This system will be responsible for… • monitoring the voltages, amperages, wattages, etc. for each of the solar panels that are installed. • alerting the user when a specified voltage/wattage is not being reached • Much of the requirements are still loosely-defined at the moment. Could be expected to handle more as semester progresses.
The system shall… • For every solar panel be able to monitor the… • Voltage • Current • Power • Be DYNAMIC so that… • Solar panels can be added to the system arbitrarily • Solar panels can be removed from the system arbitrarily • Solar panels can be updated arbitrarily
The system shall… 3. Have a touch-screen that will provide all the functionality of… • a monitor • a mouse • [maybe] a keyboard (if we need the user to input letters/numbers) 4. Have a database to keep records of each panel’s history.
an Intense GUI design:-extremely user friendly-provides a ton of options/features to the user -HTML, JSP, JavaBeans, Java • “sensory equipment”: -*NOW: electrical equipment aspect of this is being handled by someone else. -interacts with GUI control system via a Serial Port connection -my part: figure out how to transmit a message through a Serial Port using Java (the “Serial Port Driver”) • Touch-screen technology:-how does a touch-screen work? -how will the GUI link up with the touch-screen?

So where do we go from here? • Finish off the GUI/Serial Port Integration. • Test it all thoroughly. • Get it all working on the final desktop. • Research the “Touchscreen” • Feberuary 16th– March 1st: • Integrate the software to the electrical “sensory” equipment. • All of March: • Test entire system (without Touchscreen). • March 30th: • Entire system finished (except for Touchscreen).
