CAUSE The Fitzgeralds began rebelling against the Queen in the 1570’s because: • They were Catholic and didn’t want to become Protestant • They controlled Munster for hundreds of years and didn’t want to give their land to anyone
Queen Elizabeth fought back against the Fitzgerald's. She Defeated them and took all their land.
How it happened??THE COURSE The queen took the land from the Fitzgeralds The land was divided up into estates (4,000, 8,000 or 12,000 acres) Land was given to English people who were going to be loyal to the Queen. These people were called undertakers
CALLED UNDERTAKERS BECAUSE • They undertook to keep the rules of Plantation. • Bring in English families to farm the land • Pay soldiers to protect them from the Fitzgeralds • Were not allowed to rent land to Irish farmers. • Must follow the Protestant religion.
CONSEQUENCE SUCCESS OR FAILURE???
SUCCESS BECAUSE • Farming practices took hold and are still common in Munster today. • New towns that the English people built grew. They are still major towns today. (Mallow and Killarney).
FAILURE BECAUSE: • Only 4,000 English settlers came to Munster. Queen Mary expected 20,000. • They had to employ Irish people because there was not enough English. • They also rented land to Irish people because they paid high rents.
