Long and Short Vowel System • The Ojibway language has 7 vowels which are made up with short and long vowels. • The long vowels take longer to utter and most are pronounced with a nasal sound, eg. Goon (Snow). • Each vowel has a distinct sound that differs from English.
Short Vowels • A a Pronounced “uh” as in Cup • O o Pronounced “oh, oo”as in Book • I I Pronounced “ih” as in Pit
Long Vowels • E e Pronounced “ ay” as in Day. • iiPronounced “ ee” as in Peek. • OO Pronounced “oh, oa” as in soup, soak • aa Pronounced “ah” as in doctor’s say AH.

Consonants- that are the same • M miigwech ( thank you) • N Niin ( me, I) • Y eya ( yes) • H Haaw sa (O.K) • W Gaawiin ( no)
Consonants that don’t match up with English K, P, T are pronounced as if there was an H in front of them, Apii, is pronounced Ahpee, Ikido is pronounced Ihkihdo. D is pronounced as a Teh sound, Dede is pronounced TehTeh. Zh is pronounced as Shh, Zhooniyaa.
G is pronouced as a K, Giin is pronounced Keen. B is pronouced as a P/B Bizindan- some speakers will have a more P sound Pehzehndan. J is pronounced as a ch (church), maajaan is pronounced Mah ch ah n
