Q/A from project discussions 1. What is the current status of the school? The school opened in July, 2006 2. How many students and teachers are there, if any? This school year there are 175 students and 7 teachers, 1 peon, 1 principal, 1 rickshaw bus driver. 3.What is the current of the school's infrastructure? This question is confusing because it appears a word might be missing after "current". If you asking what is the current status of the building, it is almost totally completed. School had to start before all the plastering and painting had been done. But at this time, the painting is done or will be very shortly.
Q/A from project discussions 4. Do they charge fees to the students? If yes, how much and how is that revenue used towards the development of the school? Fees are collected from parents that can pay them. We chose to do this because we feel that people value more that in which they have invested. We believed that if parents pay something, they will be more invested and involved and will see to it the children attend regularly and do their homework. And parents will be more apt to come to parent meetings or other events that are held for parents at the school. This year parents of 47 children were able to pay Rs 50/month. These funds are used to pay toward teacher salaries.
Q/A from project discussions 5. What percentage of the project's budget is Open Arms funding? and towards what purposes is that funding being used? Open Arms has covered expenses of completing the building and costs of operating the school. 6. What is the admission criteria for the students? Only that they be old enough to attend school, desire an education, and are willing to come regularly. 7. Where will they obtain the remaining funding for the school ? At present, Open Arms is struggling to cover expenses. Several unexpected donations have made this possible.
Q/A from project discussions 8. Which board is this school affiliated ? OMCS, the India based NGO that has established the school, has it's own board which governs the school. 9. How many grades currently school have ? Kindergarten to 8th grade 10. Is it registered with the government? CURRENTLY THE SCHOOL HASNT APPLIED FOR GOVT RECOGNITION 11. Are meals provided right now? No. Funding for this, but we still very much desire to offer meals. Regarding School Affiliation: More details in future slides
Q/A from project discussions 12. Is the funding stated, needed in full irrespective of the number students currently attending the school? No, the cost is somewhat less because of fewer classes this year. Also the small amount that parents pay also reduces somewhat the total needed. This year's current need is only $6200. Next year, we expect 300-350 students, so the amount projected in the original application will be the cost for that year.
School recognition status - current info • What is the current status for getting the government recognition of this school ? The application for government recognition will be submitted in February, and the recognition will be granted within one month of that submission. It is my understanding that the government only accepts applications in February and March each year. 2. Who conducts the final examinations (who sets the question paper) The Govt. education board sets up the paper for 5th standard and other higher classes. For the KG and 1,2,3,4,6,7 grades the school teachers set up the test for the students. 3. If student studying in this school leaves the school and join another school will the certificate given by this school be valid to get admit in a different school..? Yes
