Eukaryotic Cell Processes MEIOSIS (one 2n cell becomes four 1n cells) MITOSIS (make more of same ploidy) 2n 2n 2n 2n 1n 1n 1n 1n FERTILIZATION - two 1n cells fuse to become one 2n cell
eukaryotic cells (nucleus, etc.) Eukaryote Phylogeny Chrom- alveolata Amoebozoa Excavata Animalia Rhizaria Plantae Fungi most protozoans, brown algae, & water “molds”
Bacterial Cell (protein & nucleic acid) (nucleic acid) NO nucleus NO organelles e (contains peptidoglycan) (lipid bilayer with embeded proteins) (mostly H2O)
Plant Cell cell wall w/cellulose
Amoebozoan Cell NO cell wall NO chloroplasts
Fungal Cell (Yeast) with chitin mitochondrion (glycogen Granule) NO CHLOROPLASTS
Animal Cell NO CHLOROPLASTS NO CELL WALL ribosomes vacuole mitochondrion endoplasmic reticulum nucleus cytoplasm plasma memb. Golgi apparatus
Reminders for the Lab • READ the instructions () in the manual • Ceramic sterilizers are HOT. • Be careful with the Bunsen burners and open flames. Do not set yourself on fire. The instructor must be in the room if a Bunsen burner is on. • Methylene blue WILL stain skin or clothes. • Put cover slips on at an angle to avoid trapping air bubbles.
