Derived Product Imagery (DPI) from the GOES Sounder • Personnel: A.S. Bachmeier, G.M. Bayler, C.C. Schmidt, T.J. Schmit, A.J. Schreiner, G.S. Wade, T.M. Whittaker • Objective: To provide GOES Sounder products in an image format, for easy and ready display in forecasting/nowcasting environments, to help better utilize the nearly continual, frequent observational capability of the current geostationary sounders. • Accomplishments: • Maintained reliable production and improved web posting of hourly real-time DPI from the GOES Sounders, including cloud top pressure, atmospheric moisture and stability, and total ozone. Added display of more individual Sounder bands (such as band 5 (at 13.3 um)), at NWS request. [http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/realtime/realtime.html] • Established routine production from GOES-11 during its “science test period” of June through August 2000. [http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/realtime/g11/g11realtime.html] • Provided new ways to display information from the DPI on the CIMSS Realtime GOES Page: cursor selective time series plotting; plotting of GOES minus first-guess values over the matching DPI (to highlight impact areas), including primary representative parameters and levels with respect to stability (850mb T, Td; 500mb T); and, adding three layers of moisture DPI (compared to only total values previously).
Derived Product Imagery (DPI) from the GOES Sounder • Accomplishments (continued): • Incorporated modifications to Cloud Top Pressure DPI displays by increasing (color) resolution of the lower levels displayed (following implementation of the maritime inversion check procedure) and including a higher resolution horizontal display, focussing on easier viewing of the conterminous US. [http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/realtime/grtmain.html#ctop] • Hosted a NASA SHARP (Summer High School Apprenticeship Research Program) student (C. Nosal, Pensacola, FL) for summer 2001 and directed/mentored a project to display the daily severe weather reports (tornado, 3/4” hail, and wind (damage)) on the previous afternoon’s Lifted Index DPI and the evening’s Precipitable Water DPI to provide a ready and easy way to monitor any simple correlation that would be evident between atmospheric stability/moisture fields and subsequent severe weather. • Included Sounder DPI in several weather cases described on the “GOES Gallery” within the last year. [http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/goes/misc/interesting_images.html] • Continually promoted more effective and less confusing color enhancements for GOES DPI displays as shown on NWS AWIPS workstations. CIMSS examples were extensively used during numerous “VISITview” teletraining sessions on “GOES Sounder Data and Products”, offered during the spring and summer of 2001 to NWS forecasters. • Contributed to on-going effort with CIRA/RAMMT and FPDT staff to publish an article including application of GOES-11 Sounder data in the case of 24-25 July 2000 (Nebraska).

Example of GOES Sounder Precipitable Water (moisture) DPI from late June 2000 From the GOES Gallery web page for the 22 June 2000 case… The second earliest start on record of the annual Arizona "monsoon" began on 19 June 2000, leading to several days of convective activity over the southwest US. NOAA GOES Sounder Precipitable Water (PW) images (above) show the northward surge of higher PW values during the 16-19 June period. PW values across Arizona on 16 June were less than 20 mm (blue enhancement), but increased to 30-40 mm (yellow to red enhancement) during the following few days.
