International Conference on Prevention and Management of Marine Litter in European Seas • European contributiontothe global Honolulu-Strategy on measuresandactionstoaddressproblemof marine litter (initiatedby UNEP & NOAA) • In Berlin, April 10-12th, 2013, Abion Spreebogen Waterside Hotel • Co-organizedby Germany (BMU/UBA) & the European Commission (DG Environment/D2) • In total 200 representatives: • Public: MS, RSC, EC, UNEP, localauthorities • Private sectors: NGOs, plasticproducers, converters, recyclers, packagingindustry, retailers, consumerorganisations, shipping & fishingsector, portauthorities, researchinstitutes etc. @ J. van Franeker

Conference goals • Development of an EU contribution to the Rio + 20 obligation: "We further commit to take action to, by 2025, based on collected scientific data, achieve significant reductions in marine debris to prevent harm to the coastal and marine environment." • Recommendations for the further development and achievement of coherenceof existing Regional Action Plans and initiation of outstanding Regional Action Plans on marine litter for the European marine regions in support of the Regional Seas Conventions • Collection of good/best practices and commitments: Support of MS with the identification and implementation of programmes of measures for D10 in 2015/2016 as required by MSFD @ A. Palatinus
