Philippians 1:6 “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it (NIV – carry it on to completion) until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Compete in Unity Completion Project
I. Division and Immaturity • 1 Corinthians 1:10 - 12 • Appeal to you – by the authority of Jesus • Live in harmony with each other • No divisions • Of one mind – united in thought and purpose • NASB - “… be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.” • Some are saying “I am a follower of ___________.”
1Corinthians 3:1-9 • I couldn’t talk to you as spiritual, but as infants • I had to feed you milk, not solid food • Jealous, quarrelsome, - proving you are controlled by the sinful nature • I am a follower of ____________ • We are only servants doing what God gave us to do • The important thing – God made the increase • V.21 – don’t boast about following a particular human leader
Application • Don’t boast about a particular stream of ministry, or bent of teaching at the expense of another – that equals immaturity (1 Corinthians 4:6-7) • Have open conversations with those of other streams – some are planting, some are watering • However, don’t follow others into error
II. Spiritual Dullness and Immaturity • Hebrews 5:11-14 • Spiritually dull – don’t listen
Ought to be teachers, but still need someone to teach you the basics
Solid food is for the mature – through training (NASB – because of practice) have the skill to recognize right and wrong
Hebrews 6:7-12 • A good crop or thorns and thistles • We are confident you are meant for better things • You have shown love to God by caring for others • Keep on loving others – then you will not become spiritually dull • Follow the examples of those who are going to inherit God’s promises
III. Follow the Leader? • 1 Corinthians 11:1 • Imitate me as I imitate Christ • Know the voice of the shepherd (John 10) • Shepherds appointed by God • Acts 20:28 “So guard yourselves and God’s people. Feed and shepherd God’s flock—his church, purchased with his own blood—over which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as elders.”
Hebrews 13:17 Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit.
Colossians 1:25, 28 - 29 25God has given me the responsibility of serving his church by proclaiming his entire message to you. 28So we tell others about Christ, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all the wisdom God has given us. We want to present them to God, perfect in their relationship to Christ. 29That’s why I work and struggle so hard, depending on Christ’s mighty power that works within me.
In this day I am asking you to yield more and more of yourself to Me. You sing the words, “reign in me” and that is My desire. But it is unable to be done unless you completely yield yourself to Me. As you do, the Lord is saying, as you do yield yourself to Me, and as I have a greater portion, a greater part, even all of your life, the fruitfulness of that walk with Me will abound. You will be surprised at the things you see take place. You will be surprised at the words that come to your mind and mouth to speak to other people. They will be My words as your mind and heart are yielded to Me.
Even as the Word says submit therefore unto God, resist the devil and he will flee. As you are yielded more and more to Me you will have greater and greater strength in spiritual warfare in resistance of the enemy. Whether it be his temptations in your life, whether it be his conflicting with the Word of God in your life, whether it be his attempts to kill, to steal, to destroy. You will have greater power against the enemy as you yield more and more to Me.
IV. Benediction • Hebrews 13:20-21
Interaction Time • Why do we become so closed minded to learning things from others in a different denomination or stream of ministry? • If you combined the scriptural directives of “loving others” and “by now you ought to be able to teach others”…are you willing to express love to someone else by helping instruct them to make them a follower of Jesus? Who would you be willing to mentor? • Would you be described by God in his word as mature or immature?
For several decades, Blakelock said, church doctrine has been slipping away from basis in the clear authority of scripture. It took the church almost two years, for instance, to defrock Ann Holmes Redding, the Seattle Episcopal priest who said she is both Christian and Muslim.
