  2. Objective • FWBAT understand the importance of established rules and rituals in creating a positive learning environment • FWBAT agree on a set of rules and rituals that will be seen throughout all tutoring rooms.

  3. Do Now • Parking Lot Walk – • In groups of 3-4, discuss and add your ideas for each poster paper. • Why are rules and rituals important? • What are the positive outcomes of rules and rituals? • What are the negative outcomes of rules and rituals?

  5. Rules vs. Rituals Rules Rituals Procedures of how you want something done Usually do not have rewards or consequences • Pertain to how your students will behave • Should be observable and positive • There should only be between 3-5 • Visible/Posted • Have penalties and rewards

  6. What makes a “Good” rule? • Stated in a positive way • Observable • Applicable during all times of the day • Applicable to behavior only • Have a compelling rationale

  7. What makes a “Good” ritual? • Simple • Predictable • Engages students in a positive manner • Solves a problem

  8. Why rituals matter • Can be small, yet significant • For example, attendance • Improve classroom management • Since all students are involved, helps students connect with one another, building a sense of community • Students know what to expect and how to respond

  12. Break Out Session • In your group, brainstorm a list of rules and rituals you feel are important for all students to follow during the tutoring session. • 15 minutes • Groups will combine into 2 groups and decide on the 5 rules and 3 rituals they feel are the most important. • 10 minutes

  13. DMF Agreement • As a whole team, we will decide on 5 rules and 3 rituals all students will follow. • Create a poster for each of the tutoring rooms with the rules/rituals and agree to ALL enforce and follow them.

  14. Great Rules: Only the Beginning • Positive Reinforcement • Encourages students to behavior appropriately • Increases self-esteem • Creates positive environment • Consequences • A way to communicate to students when a behavior is unacceptable and that it is detrimental to learning

  15. Exit Ticket • Reflect and discuss the following questions: • Why is it important that we ALL follow/enforce the set of rules and rituals? • How do rules and rituals establish a safe and positive learning environment?
