Why Water StarSM? • 2005 Florida population almost 19 million • Expected to increase by 11 million by 2030 • Demands for potable water outpacing groundwater supply
Florida Water StarSM A Program of the St. Johns River Water Management District
Florida Water StarSM A voluntary certification program for builders and home buyers to guarantee a minimum level of water efficiency. The goal of this program is to save 40% of current outdoor water use and 20% of current indoor use.
Partners • Florida Irrigation Society • University of Florida • Program for Resource Efficient Communities • Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Program • Department of Landscape Architecture • JEA • Gainesville Regional Utilities • Toho Water Authority • St. Johns County Utilities Department • Northeast Florida Builders Association
Builder Partners • Collins Builders – first certified homes • Beazer Homes • Bestcon Homes • ICI Homes • St. Johns Housing Partnership • Mercedes Homes • Palace Builders
Into the Future Florida Water StarSM affects water-use efficiency on the lot level • SJRWMD is moving toward resource-efficient master planning • Low Impact Development (LID) • Florida Water StarSM • Green covenants, codes and restrictions (CCR) • Storm water and water quality
Florida WaterStarSM 2007 • Indoor • Florida Water StarSM standards • Accredited individuals/companies for inspection • Check list • Irrigation • Florida Water StarSM standards • Accredited individuals/companies for inspection • Check list • Landscaping • Florida Water StarSM standards • Accredited individuals/companies for inspection • Check list • Certifier/Providers • Assess • Paperwork • Designs • Qualifications • Issue certification • Florida Water StarSM Agency • Develop criteria for certifiers • Administer test of certifiers • Inspect certifiers • Random annual inspection of landscapers, plumbers and • irrigation firms • Maintain records
Indoor Highlights • Toilets –MaP standards – 350 gm per flush minimum • Includes 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) @ 350 gm for ONE flush • Performance reduced consumption • High-efficiency toilets (1.28 gpf) • Dual flush (1.2 gpf average) • Water-efficient dishwashers – 6.5 gpl or less • Water-efficient clothes washers – 6 gallons per cubic foot or less • Leak and rupture protection devices
High Efficiency Toilets • 1 to 1.28 gpf • Dual flush – Full 1.6 gpf and half 0.8 gpf • Re-engineered technology • Larger 3-inch valves for greater water pressure • New flapper materials that don’t corrode • Leaking will not occur in 3–5 years
Leak and Rupture Protection Devices Valve closes when abnormal flow is detected • Installed on pressurized hoses • Dishwasher • Refrigerator • Washing machine • Protects from water damage if pressurized hose breaks – especially valuable when no one is home
Outdoor Benefits Florida Water StarSM landscapes • Provide attractive Florida landscapes • Reduce turf area • Reduce outdoor water use • Provide greater privacy to home sites
Turf areas shall not exceed 60 percent if site conditions require regular irrigation after establishment
Right Plant, Right Place Select plants appropriate to the site • Sun or shade requirements • Mature size • Soil needs • Water needs • Salt and cold tolerance • pH tolerance
Irrigation • Agricultural irrigation system efficiencies* are 60 percent to 90 percent • Landscape irrigation considered excellent at 70 percent efficiency • Florida Water StarSM objective is to attain 60 percent For efficient irrigation • Group plants together based on their water needs • Only water where and when needed
