  3. Poetry • Virgil- Aeneid; showed that Rome’s past was as heroic as Greece • Aeneas • Virgil wanted to spark patriotism and unite Rome during rule of Augustus • Satirize- make fun of • Horace, Juvenal, and Martial

  4. History • Livy- Also wanted to spark patriotism • Tales of Horatius and Cincinnatus • Tacitus- Admired the Germans

  5. Philosophy • Stoicism would be reflected in Christian teachings

  6. Art and Architecture • Realism • Mosaic- a picture made from chips of colored stone or glass • Architecture • Grandeur • Columns, arches, and domes

  7. Technology and Science • Engineering- application of science and math • Aqueducts- bridgelike structures that brought water into cities • Ptolemy- geocentric universe • Galen- medical encyclopedia

  8. Roman Law • JUSTICE • Civil law vs. law of nations • Innocent until proven guilty, indisputable evidence, judges interpreted laws
