Class Mini-Census • Every 5 years: Canadian government conducts a census (a survey of the population) • We will conduct a class mini-census to see how we compare. • On the blank slip of paper provided, answer the following questions: • How many people live in your household? • The average household in Canada has 2.6 people. • What is the age of each person • The median age of Canadians is 37.6. • How many people in your household were born outside Canada? • % of Canadians born outside of Canada is 37%.
Where do we get info about population? • Add to your key terms handout: • Demography: the study of human population • Census: An official government survey of its population, usually taken every 5 or 10 years • The last Statistics Canada census was on May 10, 2011. • Canadians are asked questions about their age, gender, marital status, education, employment, income, ethnicity and more.
Why study a country’s population? • Copy the following in your notebooks: • Demographers study 4 characteristics of a population: • Population numbers: how many people are there? • Population distribution: where are people & why do they live there? • Population trends: how has the population changed? • Population issues: what problems arise related to the population of an area?
Why study a country’s population? • Who uses this information? • Government officials: • Plan services such as roads, hospitals, recreational facilities • Businesses • Plan location of new stores • Social services • Determine need for daycares, shelters, retirement homes • Educators • New schools and programs • Media • Choose news programs, target commercials to audiences
