Sum, Difference, Product, and Quotient of Functions • Let f and g be two functions with overlapping domains. Then, for all x common to both domains, the sum, difference, product, and quotient of f and g are defined as follows. • Sum: (f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x) • Difference: (f – g)(x) = f(x) – g(x) • Product: (fg)(x)= f(x)*g(x) • Quotient: (f/g)(x) = f(x)/g(x)
Finding the Sum and Difference of Two Functions • Given f(x) = 2x + 1 and g(x) = x2 + 2x -1, find (f + g)(x) and (f – g)(x). Then evaluate the sum and difference when x = 2.
Finding the Product of Two Functions • Given f(x) = x2 and g(x) = x – 3. find (fg)(x). Then evaluate the product when x = 4.
Finding the Quotient of Two Functions • Find (f/g)(x) and (g/f)(x) for the functions given by and Then find the domains of f/g and g/f.
