Besides impacting the career, admission to a college of choice helps build self-esteem and confidence of a student. Highlighting the close association between mental well-being and college life, a recent study found that students ending up at a college with peers of lesser ability compared to their classmates at their school are more likely to go through various overwhelming emotions. To determine the impact of such a mismatch on mental health, the researchers analyzed the data of 1,453 respondents in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. Moreover, students from approximately 100 representative high schools in the United States completed questionnaires during high school and college, respectively. to The participants were asked questions pertaining to their depression and self-esteem. Some questions were as follows: How often did they experience blues in the past week? Whether they enjoyed life or not? Were they irritated by things that did not matter to them earlier? Did they lack energy? Did they face problems in concentrating? Did they feel that they were disliked by others? The study found that the phenomena called “undermatching,” going to a college of lower academic ability, is quite prevalent among students. It also indicated that students who went to undermatched colleges were more likely to experience a 27 percent increase in their symptoms of depression. Earlier research had indicated that equally able students tend to develop a lower academic self-image when put in high-ability schools. However, the aforementioned is the first-of-its-kind study to focus on the impact of college transitions, particularly to a lower ability institution. The rigors of the academic life are likely to worsen the situation. Therefore, it is important to choose college with care. Lastly, the company of academically weaker students could increase the feeling of being more gifted and talented than others add up to their depression. Therefore, the changes in the academic environment matter a lot for every student. Before selecting a school or college, students need to conduct adequate research for adequate information on the institution.
