Promoting safe and healthy ways of using the internet in the classroom Ms. Sherman
This school year your student will be able to use technology in the classroom in order to complete projects and activities. Before we use the internet in order to complete research students will learn the appropriate ways of using the internet.
International Society for Technology in Education • The International Society for Technology in Education outlines standards for Students. There are six topics that are addressed through these standards, they are: • Basic operations and concepts • Social, ethical, and human issues • Technology productivity tools • Technology communications tools • Technology research tools • Technology problem solving and decision making tools
National Laws Related to Internet Use: • Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, COPPA • This law affects United States Commercial Web Sites and 3rd party websites that schools permit students to access.
Children’s Internet Protection Act, CIPA • This law requires schools and libraries that receive federal funding to have safe use internet policies.
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, FERPA: • This law protects the privacy of students records and applies to all schools that receive funds under a program of the US Department of Education.
Teacher’s Responsibility: • Web sites are always evaluated before used in classroom activities. Web sites are evaluated in order to confirm that they are appropriate for student use. • Web sites are evaluated based on the following criteria: • Content • Authenticity • Learning strategies • Navigation • Graphics • Appeal • Availability
Teacher’s Responsibility: • In addition to web site evaluation internet and computer activity will be monitored and supervised. • The NETS*T for Teachers also has standards to abide by they are: • Technology operations and concepts • Planning and designing learning environments and experiences • Teaching, learning, and the curriculum • Assessment and evaluation • Productivity and Professional Practice • Social, ethical, legal and human issues.
Baltimore County Policies: • Baltimore County Public Schools has created a Telecommunications Acceptable Use Policy for Students and Teachers. This policy protects students from harmful internet activitity. • Your student will have to read and sign an acceptable use agreement in order to use the internet at Towson High School.
