Archbishop Hutton’s VC Primary SchoolWelcome Home and school Where does homework fit in?
I can……I will….. We can……We will….. BE ORGANISED!
“ Homework should be as routine as brushing your teeth. It shouldn’t take long or be stressful, but if you do it well and carefully, you have good results to show.”
Praise and recognition is given to the fact that the pupil is able to organise themselves This is work that is done both at home and at school Everything is based on repetition, self-assessment and growth in personal confidence
Work that supports future life-skills Homework that is easy to manage by the child, family and the school Homework that promotes well-being as well as attainment
A scheme to promote pupil pride in themselves and their own work
School will: • assess the pupil’s level and set work regularly • check work for completion • provide praise and incentives (not points or certificates but ‘special mentions’) • work with parents
Parents will need to: • create regular routines – space, time and interaction • give help and encouragement when it is needed • support organisation between home and school
Pupils will: • be shown and know what has to be done • learn to organise self and ask for help • want to achieve
School, Pupil and parents together: • Expect to practise and organise self and the homework materials • Expect to do homework 5 out of 7 nights – 10 to 30 minutes each time • Date and record the work done
Homework is about developing the relationship between home and school. Parents should feel they can approach the teacher for guidance and support. School can approach the parent to discuss how things are going.

Spelling and grammar – step 1 Learn these spellings: not, of, the, a box, top, on, to hop, from, hiss You should be able to: • Read these words • Sound them out (eg, t-o-p, top) • Write them neatly when someone says them to you • Write them correctly in a simple sentence of about 5 words with a capital letter and full stop. Some of your sentences should start with a subject and a verb: eg “I am…” or “You are….”, “Stan is….” or “The dog is….”
Step 8 - assessment conscience electrician previous industrious guess guiltily listening whistling achieving entrance scissors GRAMMAR – Planning a persuasive essay/letter

I can……maths Step 1 – applied maths Write numbers 0 – 9 6 + ___ = 10 7 – 2 = words for subtraction 8 – n = 4 What is n? 10p = ___p + 2p What coins can you use? Draw a horizontal line How many 5p coins make 10p
I can……maths Applied – Stage 6 Learn to do these: 65 – 38 = 0.3x 8 = £6.72 – 89p = 294 x 5 is approx ? Sketch an acute and an obtuse angle What is 1% as fraction and decimal?
I can…..read My book and words Up to and including Stage 4 children have word sheets to learn and a book which has the words as part of the text. Children above Stage 8 are also encouraged to read the book from the scheme as well as ‘free reading’ material – ie, a book of their choice.
Somebody read out loud to me We also encourage parents to read out loud to children and your child’s class teacher will recommend texts or familiar books. This is an important aspect of reading for children.
I can…. draw, science, think… Important things to do and know…. Lay the table for a meal Help to cook or bake Wash a few dishes Clean out a pet Why do leaves fall off trees in autumn? Draw a flower What is air pressure?
The homework is completed in one book. It is seen daily by the teacher and marked weekly. The teachers show children where to keep books and work. The children are shown the skill at school and how to practise it at home.
PRESENTATION SKILLS • Put the date and title and underline them • Form letters and numbers carefully and neatly • Cut out and glue neatly • Take pride in what I do • Care for my books and keep them looking good • Ask for help and organise myself
Children are assessed in school – daily, weekly, monthly This means they can repeat work and be asked to remember it from previous stages to make sure ‘they have still got it’. They have a 90% - 95% accuracy to progress – assessed by the school but not in the context of a ‘test’.
Children sometimes benefit from going back and practising stages and examples. Changes between stages, steps and levels are discussed and communicated with children and parents. This is not a ‘race’ through a scheme, but about organisation and skills.
