  4. Axis and Allied Powers • During WWII there were the Axis and Allied powers. Let’s learn about both powers! Pay attention…you’ll have to take a quiz!

  6. Axis Powers • The three principle partners in the axis alliance were Germany, Italy, and Japan • There was German hegemony over most of Continental Europe

  7. Axis Members • Besides Germany, Italy, and Japan…Hungry, Romania, and Bulgaria were also members of the Axis powers • September 27, 1940 Germany, Italy, and Japan signed the Tripartite Pact, uniting these countries as the Axis leaders

  8. Axis Interest • The Axis powers had two common interests… 1) Territorial expansion and foundation of empires based on military conquest 2) The destruction of the Soviet Communism

  9. Axis Fall • Italy was first to surrender on September 8, 1943, then Bulgaria one year later • Romania leaves Axis powers August 23, 1944 • Hungary NEVER surrendered • On May 7, 1945, seven days after Hitler’s suicide, Nazi Germany surrendered

  12. Allied Involvement • Allied powers became involved because 1) Already been invaded 2) Directly threatened with invasion by Axis powers 3) Concerned the Axis would control most of the world

  13. Allied Alliance • US President devised the name “United Nations” for the allied powers • The “Big Three” + China = “Trusteeship of the powerful” or “the four policemen”

  14. Lasting Allied Influence • Caused the Axis powers to fall and stay obsolete • The declaration by United Nations, created by allied powers, on January 1, 1942 became basis for current day United Nations

Battle of Okinawa codename-Operation Iceberg • Fought on Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa, lasted 82 days from April 1, 1945 – June 22, 1945 • Largest Pacific War Battle • Known as typhoon of steel battle • Us Causalities ~ 84,000 Japan ~ 100,000 + • Believed to lead directly to bombings of Hiroshima

  18. Battle of the Bulge • Belgium, Luxemburg, and Germany • December 16, 1994 to January 25, 1945 • Germany’s last offensive on the western front • Germany forced to retreat • Casualties -American: 89,500 -British: 1,400 -German: 67, 200

  19. Battle of NormandyAKA D-DAY, Codename Operation Overload • June 1944- August 1994 • 156,000 American, British, and Canadian forces land on 50 mile stretch of beach • Surprised Axis Powers • Known as “the beginning of the end” to WWII
