The LILAC Project Ecology – Equality - Community
The Co-housing Revolution Co-housing allows for people’s desire for privacy and the desire to live community Based on a Danish model (began 1972, now 1% of population) 300 + Netherlands, 160+ USA, 16 in the UK, lots in development
LILAC is built on three principles:: Low Impact Living – building low carbon homes that allow residents to have low impact lifestyles Affordable – meeting the challenge of a lack of affordable housing Community – building friendly, inclusive neighbourhoods
Low Impact Living • Behaviour • Shared meals • Allotments • Car pooling • Shared resources • Composting • Recycling Infrastructure • Good design • Natural materials • Renewable technology • Sustainable drainage • Limited car parking / encouraged bike use
Affordable Mutual Home Ownership Society Each house is allocated ‘equity units’ (EU) in the Society based on their income and house size You either buy your EU monthly over 20 years or buy them all upfront When you move out, you get most of the value of your EU back Linked to earnings not housing market
Community Co-housing design principles Site design Consensus decision –making Dissensus / learning to live with difference Task Teams Shared values ‘Community glue’ - meals, parties, skill share, events
