Sections Congress 2014 Amsterdamor how Ray had a hoot in Holland
Amsterdam was founded in 1275 and the “Old Church” from 1306 is still in use. • Being practical people, when the town got bigger the Dutch built another church and named it the “New Church.” • The average high was in the low 60’s and there was light rain every day. • Nonetheless a €2 umbrella solved matters and we all got around easily on foot and on the ubiquitous trams.
The RAI center where the congress was held is quite large and has a good restaurant district alongside. Most meals were provided. The breakfasts and dinners were typical, but the lunches were very special. They succeeded at showing off the variety and quality of Dutch cuisine. • Most of the congress had three concurrent tracks. • 1/3 were held in breakout rooms. • I attended a number of these. • 2/3 were held in large booths in the main hall. • I found these noisy and hard to follow. • And 1/3 (yes 4/3) were ignite sessions in another large booth. • The format of an ignite is to present a topic for 5 minutes and then to let all discuss it.
The main hall had many booths for various presentations, mostly IEEE unit related but some by outside sponsors (e.g., Phillips). For example, I got my 25 year membership pin at one booth. • Some members wore clothing representative of their home countries. If there had been a fashion prize, Lahore Pakistan would have won it. • A member from New Iberia, Louisiana brought two cases of mini bottles of Tabasco sauce and had one of the booths give away sample bottles. • I never did meet anybody in the Egyptian delegation, but did spend time with the six members from Singapore.
Down to business. Here are the five voted recommendations: • 9. Include free access to IEEE Digital Library as a member benefit. Promote other IEEE services and products based on their usage and preferences (adopt Google Business Model). • 1. Develop an incentive and recognition program for companies that invest in full or partial support of their employees' IEEE membership dues. • 3. Introduce loyalty rewards such as publication access, conference fees, standards for continued membership. • 2. Provide a tool to build, promote, record, host and broadcast technical events at the local level and make them available to IEEE members. • 23. Enhance vTools for better usability by volunteers and provide a training program to the Sections.
