What is Listening? Listening is the process of receiving, constructing meaning from, and responding to spoken and/or non-verbal messages. • a form of communication • an active process • absorption of the meanings of words and sentences by the brain. • leads to the understanding of facts and ideas Effective Listening Is : • actively absorbing the information given to you by a speaker • showing that you are listening and interested • providing feedback to the speaker so that he or she knows the message was received. • Effective listeners show speakers that they have been heard and understood.

Stages of Listening • Receiving: Response caused by the sound waves stimulating the sensory receptors of the ear; it is physical response. • Understanding:Stage at which you learn what the speaker means – the thoughts and the emotional tone. • Remembering: Process of placing the appropriate information into short-term or long-term storage. • Evaluating:It is a stage in which active listeners participate It is the process of deciding the value of the information to the receiver. • Responding: This stage requires that the receiver complete the process through verbal and/or nonverbal feedback. You cannot listen while talking. • Avoiding distractions or at least controlling them. • Face the speaker and maintain eye contact. • Judge content, not delivery; • Find areas of interest. • Keep your mind open; Be attentive, but relaxed. Steps to Become Effective Listener continue… • Concentration:- • Speed of Talking : 125 words per minute. • Speed of Thinking : >1200 words per minute • Thus, Speech happens at about 10% of your mind’s capacity. Steps to Become Effective Listenercontinue… • Demonstrate you are paying attention to what is being said by providing feedback through nodding your head. • Listen to words and try to picture what the speaker is saying. • Try to feel and understand what the speaker is feeling. • Joy, Fear, Sadness • Pay attention to what isn't said—to feelings, facial expressions, gestures, posture and other nonverbal cues. • Practice listening. Conclusion • Before you can get the most out of a listening situation, others must first believe that you really want to listen. They must feel that when they tell you something, it will be received by you in the proper spirit. • Learn to listen beyond the words, with your heart as well as your ears. • Observe the signs of the inner feelings such as voice quality, facial expressions, body posture and motions, etc. These actions are revealing, and sometimes may have an opposite meaning from the spoken word.
