Conflict turned into war when the minutemen and redcoats scuffled at Lexington and Concord. The march toward nationhood had begun.

green • A green is a grassy lawn or common. Many New England villages have a green for public gatherings.
accost • To accost someone means to approach and speak to or touch him or her -but not gently.
disperse • Disperse means to break up and scatter. • “Disperse, you rebels, . . . Throw down your arms and disperse.”
huzza • Huzza is an old-fashioned word for “yell.” It’s something like “hurrah.” The rebels were yelling at the British soldiers.
grenadier • Grenadiers, dragoons, regulars, redcoats – they’re all British soldiers.
minuteman • The American farmers were ready, and they grabbed their guns. They were called minutemen because they could fight on a minute’s notice.
Yankee Doodle • The British made up the song “Yankee Doodle” to insult the Americans. After the battle, the Americans sang the song, “We’ll be Yankee Doodles and proud of it.”
