  3. Significance • Developed a new way of processing film • Completed her Masters degree in chemistry • Was named inventor of the year in 1978 • “Method of Obtaining Intensified Image from Developed Photographic Films and Plates"

  4. Patents • Patented a method of enhancing pictures using radioactive materials • Was so successful that uses were beyond NASA research to improvements in X-ray technology and restoration of old pictures

  5. How it Worked • Used underexposed negatives • Otherwise would be useless

  6. NASA • Hired in 1975 • Hired to find a way to develop astronomical and geological pictures that were taken by researchers • Before Askins discovery the images were barely visible

  7. Women Inventors • Was first women patenting alone to be chosen for inventor of the year • Was among the first women who made a significant contribution in the field of space exploration • Role Model and mentor to women during the 1980s and 1990s
