What is MIC? • Typically a one-calendar year program • Rank II certification • Start out higher on pay scale • Already have Master’s degree • Initial certification in your content area(s) • Have to pass Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP) your first year of teaching in order to get full certification

3. Who may enter the Master’s Degree Program with Initial Certification (MIC)?

A person holding a degree in the content area (e.g., English, history, mathematics, chemistry, etc.) from the University of Kentucky or the equivalent to a content area degree. • Students must meet with their advisor to evaluate previous work. Most programs have specific course requirements for teaching specific content areas. These deficiencies are met prior to entering a program.

6. 3. UK College of Education graduates of an undergraduate secondary education program with an emphasis in a content area (e.g., English, history, mathematics, chemistry, etc.) • All pre-MIC program courses are met by undergraduate courses of students graduating from the UK College of Education.

7. When are applications due for MIC Program admission? • February 1, 2009 (approximately the same time every year) • Interviews are typically held at the end of February and beginning of March. The advisor for your content area will be in contact with you.

8. What constitutes a MIC application? 1. An Application to the Graduate School • Graduate School application is completed online. http://www.research.uky.edu/gs/gsapplication.html • Please note there is an application fee of $50. • Have official transcripts of all previous academic work sent to the Graduate School. This includes undergraduate work at UK. • Take the General Section of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and have scores reported to the UK Graduate School. www.ets.org to register • Minimum combined score of 800 and 4.0 on writing to be eligible for application and admission into MIC

We strongly advise you to change your password. • Fill out the applicant profile. Please be sure the email address is correct; this is how we will be communicating with you • Complete the MIC Application form

10. Complete the Character and Fitness form. Print it off, sign it, and return it to Ms. Betty McCann, 305 DH • Fill in the clinical hours form. Those of you who are taking EDC 362 check the appropriate box and then indicate where you did your placement • Complete your major and minor/support area worksheets. For MATH: The five related studies courses should be included in the related studies worksheet • For English and Social Studies, be sure you upload a writing sample.

11. 3 Letters of Recommendation – at least one from a content area professor and one from a supervising teach who can attest to your potential as a secondary teacher. These should be signed, sealed, and signed. • Copy of your transcript(s) to Ms. McCann • Copy of GRE scores – we do not have access to the Graduate School’s copies! – to Ms. McCann • Pay $30 application fee to Ms. McCann in 305 DH • Optional: Upload a photo. This will allow members of the faculty to put a face with the application.

12. It is the student’s responsibility to make certain that the application folder is complete before February 1!!! When will interviews be conducted? Late February or Early March

13. What are the expectations of applicants to the MIC Program? • Reasonably Good Grades (minimum of 2.75 overall and 2.50 in major, minor, or support areas; 2.75 in major, minor, and/or support areas for mathematics) • GRE Scores of 800+ combined, and 4.0 • Evidence of Positive Experiences with High School Students (EDC 362 type data) • Good Interviews ( examples: content knowledge, oral and written communication skills, evidence of good emotional health, knowledge of what it means to teach, potential as a teacher)

14. Are graduate content courses required in the MIC Program? • Yes. 6 hours in your content area. • Courses are chosen in consultation with your advisor.

15. When do I take the graduate content courses? • You may take them in the Spring Semester preceding your entry into the Program. In this case, you need to be admitted to the Graduate School as a post-baccalaureate student. Apply in advance. OR • A student who is within 6 hours of completing an undergraduate program may choose to enroll in the 6 + 6 Option at the Graduate School. Students must complete a written request to the Graduate School to participate in this option. If approved, 6 hrs. work may be taken at the undergraduate level and another 6 hrs. work may be taken at the graduate level. (You may want to talk to your advisor about this option.)

OR • You may take them the summer prior to or after your entry into the MIC Program • Please note: due to University restrictions and new requirements for offering summer school courses, we cannot guarantee that there will be summer courses available to take or that they will “make”. This is completely out of our control

17. Question: I took several 400G and 500 level courses in undergraduate school, may these courses be counted as graduate courses in the MIC Program? • Answer: This cannot happen under any circumstances. Any course that has been applied to a different degree does not count (i.e., no double counting!) • You must be enrolled in the Graduate School or 6 + 6 Option in order for 400G / 500 level courses to apply toward a graduate degree.

18. Question: I took graduate courses at UK or another graduate institution, may these courses be applied toward this degree? • Answer: If deemed appropriate by your advisor, you may transfer up to 9 hours of graduate work into this program. A formal transfer of credit must occur. Transfers are done after a person has been admitted to a program.

19. Question: You indicated that graduate content courses (e.g., next semester) might be taken in the post-baccalaureate status. May I continue to enroll in the post-bac. status and earn a degree and certification?) • Answer: No. Post-baccalaureate work is treated just like work at another institution. A maximum of 9 hours may be transferred into a degree program.
