Science Lab Safety
Eye Protection: When working in the lab with chemicals (other than water) or with foreign objects that could splinter, safety goggles (glasses) must be worn. Eye-Wash Stand: Used to clear eyes of foreign substances and /or chemicals. Wash eyes continuously for 5 - 15 minutes. Do not touch unless there is an emergency!
Fire Protection: Great care must be used when fire is a part of a lab. Goggles must be in place and loose long sleeves should not be worn. If a small item (such as a sheet of paper) catches fire, it may be dropped in the sink. DO NOT SQIRT OR POUR WATER ON A SMALL FIRE… AS THIS MAY CAUSE IT SPREAD.
Fire Extinguisher:Used in case of an OPEN, out of control fire. The extinguisher is used if something is on fire. Fire Blanket: Used if someone or their clothing is on fire. The person should stop, drop and roll while others get the blanket. In case of fire… call the teacher while beginning appropriate action. Do not touch equipment except in emergency.
Protection Using Chemicals: When using chemicals, safety goggles, aprons and sometimes, gloves must be worn. Chemical Shower:If corrosive chemicals (not used in Middle School) were spilled on a person or their clothing, the person would call out to the teacher and then use the chemical shower.
Protection from Vapors: Chemical vapors (visible or invisible) can be harmful or fatal if inhaled. NEVER sniff something directly from the source. Rather, waft it with your hand. Vent Hood: Used to remove harmful vapors during an experiment or when chemicals are being disposed. Primarily for teacher use.
Keeping the Lab Environment Safe: • Aprons should be wiped clean and dry before storing. • Lab Room Aisles (the area between tables) must be clear at all times. Materials should be placed in cubbyholes or at the back of the room. Lab stools must be pushed under when not in use. • Safety Goggles must be wiped clean before they are placed in the bucket or cabinet.
Science Storage Room is used to store science equipment or chemicals. NEVER ENTER without permission from the teacher. • Lab Stools must have all 4 legs on the floor at all times. Never climb up on the stools unless directed to do so by the teacher. • Lab Tables have a non-flammable, non-porous surface for safety. Do not scratch them! Tables must be dry and spotless before anyone leaves the lab.
Sinks and faucets are to be used during lab. Trash in the sinks or ‘horseplay’ with water may result in loss of lab. • Breakage requires a teacher clean-up procedure. If something is broken… everyone around the table should step back two steps and call the teacher. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN UP YOURSELF.
Personal Safety: • Long hair should be tied back in some manner during a lab. • Loose clothing (especially jackets) should not be worn in the lab. • NEVER CHEW GUM in the lab. This is for safety reasons and will be enforced!!! • Do not eat or drink anything in the lab without permission.
Things to do… • Treat others as well as you want to be treated. • Allow others to learn. • Take car of the lab and the materials we use. • Participate positively in any lab group. • Present a positive attitude. • Follow ALL LAB SAFETY RULES. • Complete your work in a timely way. • Give everyone a chance to get some attention. • Take a few chances. It’s okay to be wrong. • Come to class with your daily journal and any work or supplies. • Smile.
Things to remember… • When you enter class, be seated and begin work on the journal question. • Stay seated unless you have permission to do otherwise. • No eating or drinking in class without the teacher’s permission. • Absolutely NO gum chewing in the lab. • Never get into the lab drawers, cabinets, storage closet or vent hood without permission. • Never turn on the water or gas jets without permission. • Never put anything into the electrical sockets without permission. • The lab must be cleaned up and returned to order before anyone may leave for his/her next class. • Never ‘toss’ or throw anything in the lab. • ALL Lab Safety Rules and Procedures must be followed for science experiments or experiences to take place. • Use of abusive or vulgar language will not be tolerated. • Never refuse to allow someone to work in your lab group. • No one may interfere with anyone else’s learning. • No one may interfere with my teaching!
